"The process of painting is constantly a self criticism; is this the truth or not? Truth, authenticity and integrity. The game is not about worldly success; the real game is between oneself and that virgin canvas and to end up with a canvas that is no less beautiful than the empty canvas is to begin with”. Robert Motherwell.

That which informs my work does not have to be evident to the viewer; their only requirement is to be open. For me, painting is a process of exploration, distillation and liberation. Like life, there is always a possibility of not knowing what follows, but with intuition, practice and trust, the painting paints itself. Certainly, there are aspects of artists' work which inform my methodology. Subconscious bows are extended to Bonnard's exuberant pallette, Borduas' medium sensibility and Motherwell's poetic composition, Avery's ethereal spaces, Miro's playful 'personnages' and Still's epic image proportions. Most of all, I revere the translated 'human drama' in Rothko's paintings. Celebrating these influences has, consequently, clarified my voice; they are signposts along the path.

I choose vibrant colours because armies of black and grey lay siege wherever they can in our industrial world. The poetic interplay of these colours, shapes, textures and lines speak to the complex dynamics in our relationships; support, observance, vulnerability, trust, declaration, separateness, harmony, expectation, anxiety, boundary, love, resilience, growth, appreciation. In essence, the properties and process of painting are not unlike the people and experiences that shape us.

"It is the greatest privilege I can conceive to follow my heart and create what I love. I know there is immense self expression, healing and communication in Art and I champion those who dare to commit their lives to its vital evolution".
